This section of the web site I call shadowPlay; see the right column for the manifesto ... it's a kind of "shadow mashing," wherein I blend my cast shadow with another object's shadow and photograph it to create the illusion of a third object or situation. The trick is to disguise the fact that the person being photographed is also the photographer, and make it seem like it's a picture of a real situation.

Following the illusions are usually a few pictures of the shadow source ... click on one of the shadowPlay links, then click on a thumbnail image to check them out.

shadowPlay Manifesto:

  1. Photographs must be taken by person interacting with subject
  2. At no time should the photographer come in physical contact with any of the subjects whose shadows are being cast
  3. Imagery may not be not doctored in any way (standard post-production techniques such as increasing contrast or exposure if a shadow was captured under cloudy conditions etc., are acceptable). Judicious image cropping is also allowed if it helps the illusion. These techniques should be used as little as possible, however.
